Are You on the Fat Boy Diet?

Many of us make excuses for our bad eating habits. Some blame it on their busy work schedules. Others may say they would eat healthier if they had someone to cook for, or better yet, cook FOR them. Either way, as the summer quickly approaches, it is important to realize that no dime wants to be with a brotha who is currently on the “Fat Boy Diet”.

What is the “Fat Boy Diet” you ask?

This isn’t really a diet at all. It is merely the daily consumption of the wrong foods. Fatty fast foods that leave you feeling bloated and pitiful after you are done eating them. Food that is high in salt, sugar, or caffeine that does much more harm than good to you. As a rule of thumb, for every 1 time you eat from a drive thru window, you should be intaking 10 fruit and veggie servings. For every 1 drink of fatty beer or liquor you have on happy hour, you should be drinking 10 glasses of water.

Most of you by now may be in complete denial that you are on the Fat Boy Diet. If you want to really confirm if you are, do this simple exercise.
On one side of a paper write this:
1. Write down every meal you have had over the last 5-7 days(breakfast/lunch/snacks/dinner/everything).
2. Write down all the alcoholic beverages you have had during that same time.

Now, on the other side of a paper, write this:
1. How many salads, apples, oranges, etc. you have taken in the last 5-7 days.
2. How many glasses of water per day on average you drink.

You likely will be off that 10:1 ratio. Many brothas I know get frustrated with not seeing the results in the gym, though they are putting in the time. I know I am not perfect, but I do remember what basketball great Alonzo Mourning said to a bunch of high school ballers at a summer camp one year. He said the key to being in the best shape of your life is what you eat, not how much you can lift. If you eat right all the time, and take care of your body like it is your most valuable possession, then you will see the results you want.

Next time you are getting ready to take your lunch break, and you think about the options to eat, pass on the Mickey D’s and Chinese Food, and opt for a salad. The Fat Boy Diet is not only bad for your health, but also for your wallet.
