From time to time, I will take a timeout from the articles you find here on relationships, sex, love, booty-ful women, sports, entertainment, and fashion, and drop some reality checks. Today is Thursday, March, 4, 2010. While we are only 9 and 1/2 weeks into the year, that is more than enough time for most of you to have aborted the aspirations and dreams that you brought into New Years Day 2010 not that long ago.
Perhaps you are one of our readers that says “I don’t believe in New Years Resolutions because I never stick to them. If that is you, it’s time to change, now. You will never realize your true potential in life if you allow YOURSELF to get in YOUR own way. When I was a kid, I had a old man that stopped by the barbershop I got my cuts at tell me, “Never be the reason you fail”. I had no idea what the hell that meant at 13 years old, yet for some reason I never forgot it.
As I grew up, and “life” experiences began to happen, I started to realize the impact of the decisions I made had on me long term. There are moves I made five years ago(both good and bad) that I am still dealing with the repercussions today. Admittedly, there are also some moves I did not make that have hindered my development and/or advancement.
When I decided to launch YoungBrothas.com, it was NOT to make money, become a internet celebrity, or sex groupies(though the latter wouldn’t be bad). I wanted to provide an outlet that other liked minded young upwardly mobile men AND women could go and interact, enlighten, debate, and learn from each others’ life experiences. I had some pretty gaudy goals for year 1 of the site, and knew in order to achieve them, I, along with all supporters and contributors, had to believe in the brand.
Turning the “dream” to a reality is an on-going process, and ideally it’s one that never truly ends. The dream just changes. The moment you stop dreaming, you stop growing, and you stop daring to be greater. Some bloggers would be excited at the mild success we have had in the 10 weeks we have had since we officially opened the doors here. I know it’s all relative. We have not even put a dent into the big picture dream I have for the YB brand.
So, this post, while unlike many you find here, is my challenge to each and every one of you that is reading this. I challenge you to look yourself in the mirror tonight, and before you go to bed, ask yourself are you really closer to your dreams today than you were on January 1st. If you aren’t, what will you do differently today to change that?
This post inspired by the music of both Goapele and Drake’s versions of “Closer to My Dreams”…

Fist pump… Let's GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my b-days tomorrow so i do a lot of self reflection around this time of the year. I've started w/ one concept for my site & after months narrowed my focus. I felt a little defeated but by doing so I'm becoming well versed in my subject matter. Love it.
Thanks Jo!
I think self reflection and honesty is key to anyone attaining a goal. Most people arent honest enough with themselves, so they could never be honest with anyone else.
This kinda post let’s me know why I check for yall every day. Motivation my dude.
Thanks for the support
