Does Going to Jail Make Rappers Cool?

15 Years ago, a rapper in his prime going to jail for something made the CBS Evening News. IN 1995, rapper Tupac Shakur was convicted of sexual abuse, and while many would have thought a person’s career could be ruined, the 8 month stint he spent in prison increased his popularity and fan base. Fast forward to today, and some of the biggest names in the game have either just returned from time locked up, or will be headed back there soon.

Check out our list of the top 5 rappers (in prison) alive. These are artists who either have just been released, or will be going in the immediate future.

5. Lil Boosie - “Mr. Wipe Me Down” was sentenced in November to four years in prison for violating his probation. Boosie was on the grind prior to going in the pen, and will still be floating around the airwaves for a while.

4. Ja Rule – Jeffrey Atkins just can’t catch a break. Ja may be headed to the pen for 3 1/2 years for a gun possession charge from 2007.

3. Gucci Mane – The rapper with the most recent buzz on this list is definitely Gucci, but unfortunately for him he can’t keep his ass out of the pen. Gucci was sentenced in November to a year in prison for violating parole.

2. T.I - It’s been a long couple years for Clifford Harris Jr., but on December 22nd, 2009, his life began to look up. T.I was released from prison for purchasing machine guns and silencers. Word on the street is The King is already hard at work at getting some new music out this summer.

1. Lil Wayne – Weezy has been the hardest working man in hip hop over the past few years, and his grind is certainly paying off. Now, at the top of his game, the face of Cash Money/Young Money prepares himself to go away on a vacation.

Many in the industry believe of all the rappers who have been/are in prison, Wayne could be the one to see his stardom rise in a 2Pac-like manner. While they aren’t comparing Wayne to Pac lyrically, the pop culture status for his generation is undeniable. If you laugh at the notion, let’s revisit the interview he did with CBS Evening News Katie Couric last year:

You can take the person out of the ghetto but you cannot take the ghetto out of the person. Before any rapper made it big, their mentality, not to mention their education was of their environment. The hood. Their behavior was formed before the fame and money came. They act accordingly because we "love" them for it. If we don't expect much more out of them, except exalt them and pay them for perpuating that mentality in their songs, you think they're going to change? Well, the proof is in the stats.
